Suspension bridges : useful information

The first forms of suspension bridge appeared in China in the 1st century AD. A cable-supported suspension bridge is a metal structure whose deck is attached by cables to a flexible structure, the ends of which are connected to the bridge abutments on the banks. Unlike all other bridges, suspension bridges exert horizontal traction on their point of support.

Most suspension bridges are spectacular works of art that span dizzying abysses. Their lightweight constructions are inexpensive and blend perfectly into the landscape. Each excursion becomes a special moment, provoking unforgettable sensations in those who cross them.  You feel like you’re flying between heaven and earth, with a certain apprehension mixed with fear and vertigo. That’s exactly what attracts you, but … with all the safety you need.

While it’s a good idea to leave plenty of room for the unexpected when hiking, here are a few tips that may prove useful:

      • Make sure you are properly informed about the level of difficulty of your escapades
      • Allow time for the return journey if you are using public transport
      • Pay particular attention to the safety of your children
      • Check the weather forecast for the region you are travelling through
      • Don’t overestimate your physical abilities
      • And make sure that your usual equipment (here) is always part of your adventure
