Location: Lötschental – Fafleralp, Upper Valais right bank of the Rhone

Description: not difficult hike without any particular problem. The last climb on the old moraine, before arriving at the hut, may possibly cause problems for people very sensitive to vertigo.

Start

From the Fafleralp car park, go up the right bank of the Lonza River for 200 meters to the bridge. Cross the river and follow “Anenhütte” by the left bank. After about 1 km of walking, the road forks along the river or along the “Grundsee”. It’s a choice and the two routes meet. Afterwards, always follow “Anenhütte”. Once at the cabin, it is possible to reach the “Anensee” (15 minutes walk). For the descent take the path to the west of the hut and follow until the “Guggisee” which is an ideal place for an extended break. Continue towards Fafleralp by the path on the left bank of the “Guggisee” to the hamlet of “Guggistafel”. Join Fafleralp following the signs Parking Fafleralp.

Variant route Via ferrata (Rock metal climbing)

From the Fafleralp car park, go up the right bank of the Lonza river for 200 meters to the bridge. Cross the river and follow “Anenhütte” on the left bank. After about 1 km of walking, the road branches off to follow the river or along the “Grundsee”. It’s up to you and the two routes come together. Thereafter, always follow “Anenhütte” to the altitude point 1998. Turn right towards Rock metal climbing (indication, blue sign T4). Follow to the start of the via ferrata which is indicated. At the exit of the via ferrata, follow to the right (direction Loetschenlücke), climb slightly and return towards the Anenhuette hut. For the return, several possible routes to reach Fafleralp.

Practical information

Beautiful hike that takes place in the mythical Lötschental. Extremely preserved valley. In autumn, the colors are sumptuous. The “Anenhütte” is a private cabin, with 4-star comfort, even with a Wellness suite for two people.

The via ferrata begins with free ladders on smooth slabs, divided by terraces, in a slight zigzag. After about 60 meters of climbing, there is an area with grass and rocks, where you cross under a large boulder. The third section presents a short vertical passage slightly sloping, on which six narrow rungs make it easier for you to cross. the following is a mixed terrain without much difficulty.

In principle, you must report to the hut keeper to pay the CHF 10.— per person (5.— for children). This via ferrata is a private initiative of the caretaker.
